After the Cuban revolution in 1959, a wave of rebellion ignited in Latin America, especially among a younger generation of antiimperialist fighters who saw as possible to win independence from the most powerful nation of the world, as a small nation 200 miles from its coast had achieved it. Fidel and Che emerged as icons of that feat from which one had to learn to extend the process especially in Latin America.

Guevara, particularly, strived to continue “with his shield on his arm” extending the revolution on this continent, thereby showing a deep internationalism, opposite on its vertex to the idea of socialism in one country sustained by Stalinism. Previously, he deployed solidarity with national liberation struggles in Africa after holding senior management positions in the Cuban government which was moving from a capitalist economy to a state economy.

Che was a figure of global dimension as he theorized about the Cuban revolution and the lessons to be learned to end imperialism and capitalism.

Beyond his revolutionary consequence which itself is a great lesson since it breaks with the “café revolutionary” and shows that being a revolutionary begins at oneself, at having delivering and sacrifice ability for a greater cause for the humanity and not for personal benefit. What we must emphasize on Guevara is his conviction that imperialism must be fought against everywhere and that this struggle should not stop until the end of capitalism. Contrary to the thesis of the revolution through stages, which brought the Communist Party to support as many “progressive” bourgeois party as it found on its way, Che showed in practice that between each task there was a link and it was only possible to address these tasks with the people and as part of the people. This is why he made famous the phrase “socialist revolution or caricature of revolution” destroying the thesis that the national bourgeoisie could play a consistent role in the struggle to win national sovereignty.

His theory on Latin American revolution, however, ran into two problems. 1) Made of guerrilla warfare the only strategy when it was a tactic like many others, being the permanent and strategic one the mass struggle and the building of a revolutionary leadership. 2) he did not head off the level of consciousness and organization of the Bolivian people, particularly the peasantry that had before them democratic tasks (agrarian reform and fight against the military dictatorship) not taking into account the guerrilla tradition that the people of Cuba had in their struggle for independence and without taking into account that in Bolivia the struggle ran by unions, that already in 1952 they had achieved with COB to defeat the oligarchic state, but because of their own party’s fault ceded the power to MNR (Bolivia’s Apra) which managed to rebuild the army and traditional institutions.

However, the example of Che is imperishable, because he left the way open in many ways: the revolution is done, words are not enough, the struggle can start at nationally but is developed at the international level, the antiimperialist fight must be fought in every corner of the planet, the revolution is anticapitalist by the nature of the enemy we face. Along with all this, Ché was deeply antibureaucratic, always at the forefront of the concrete tasks, whether in production, whether in the battlefield. He distanced himself from the “real socialism” precisely because of its bureaucratic degeneration which was soon expressed in Bolivia on the betrayal of the Bolivian PC which clung to the “peaceful coexistence” that was imposed by Moscow.

As antiimperialist and socialist fighters we can not ignore these facts as they are part of the history about which we must learn both good and bad aspects. Che, despite the time elapsed, remains being the paradigm of the new man, his struggle, his flag, which is brandished by us, thousands of new fighters in a new context and with new tasks because the world has changed, but the north remains the same. Ending imperialism and capitalism throughout the world.
