We reject Piñera’s decision to support Guaido’s self-proclamation

1- The Frente Amplio de Chile rejects the decision of the President of the Republic Sebastián Piñera to support the self-proclamation of Juan Guaidó as “president in charge” of Venezuela, standing in the same line as the US President and the Lima Group.

2.- The self-proclamation of Juan Guaidó is contrary to international law as prescribed in the Basic Charter of the State of Venezuela, contributing in no way to the peaceful and democratic exit that the Venezuelan people deserve. On the contrary, it further stresses internal tensions, protests and confrontation between civilians, risking the Venezuelan nation to an eventual coup or worse yet, a civil war, with all the unfortunate cost of lives involved.

3.- It seems to us that the government maintains a position contrary to the principle of self-determination of the peoples and of international non-intervention, imply them precisely that the Venezuelan people be the agent of a peaceful and democratic solution to this situation, and the rest States to make themselves available to them.

4. We call on the Government of Chile to collaborate in a way out of this situation focused on political dialogue and not on violence. No effort should be made to provide all possible forums for a peaceful solution to the Venezuelan crisis, in order to build a democratic solution that will prevent the deepening of the conflict.
